Snakes and Ladders

One way of looking at both life and also a weight loss journey is very comparable to the board game Snakes and Ladders!

If you’ve forgotten how the game works, you roll the dice and if you land on a ladder, you climb up, but if you land on a snake, you slide down!!

The real irony is, regardless of how life shapes up, the mindset with which you approach it has a significant impact on the results. Have you noticed that when you’re in a “good place” everything seems doable and nothing is insurmountable. Issues, challenges and obstacles seem to disappear with no apparent overthinking or worry from you.

Sadly the reverse is also true. When you’re not feeling the love, all sorts of issues seem to appear, usually all at the same time, often leaving you feeling overwhelmed and defeated and usually turning to food as a comfort. Which, as we all know, never helps, merely creating or compounding our problems which may result to “giving up” until things settle down. But life IS ups and downs, and always was and always will be, the biggest difference IS your approach.

Rather than see every challenge as a set in stone obstacle – well I can’t possibly lose weight – to more of a – how can I work round this? What are MY choices, as in all honesty, there are very few challenges that can’t be worked with. You could focus on making the days /meals/weeks the best possible.

No-one can predict what each year holds for any of us. However using it as a reason to not bother even trying can create more problems than we started with. The comment we possibly get the most is “I wish I’d done this years ago” If you’re anticipating this journey as being very difficult and challenging, then make no mistake… It WILL BE!!

The real secret to succeeding is to embrace the changes you’ll make – because YOU want to, build new routines and techniques to overcome the challenges that may have previously hindered your progress. Try and see them more as a learning curve or a ladder rather than a snake and build on it, sure you won’t always get it 100% right, but practise WILL make perfect! Remember, you didn’t arrive at being overweight, less active and unhealthy overnight! You can’t reverse it overnight either!!

Enjoy the journey, be motivated by the wealth of food choices you can make, learn how to make this journey the easiest it can be. Stop focusing on just the scales and numbers, celebrate the success that isn’t always measured by numbers. Anticipate the pleasure of building a happier, healthier and lighter new life, it IS in your hands!!
