The Winter Of Our Discontent…

The phrase ‘The winter of discontent’ was coined during a period of time between November 1978 and March 1979 it was a freezing winter when Britain saw the most pervasive wave of strikes, more than 2000. Mostly due to wage restrictions set in place by the labour government.

What does being discontent mean? The dictionary definition is : A feeling you have when you are not satisfied with your situation, status, possessions or the way you are treated. The question to ask yourself is WHAT am I discontented with, and WHAT can I do to improve it…

If you feel it is the way you are being treated, the first point of call is with who is treating you this way and why? Then a conversation needs to happen as to how it’s making you feel. It often comes as a complete shock as they may not realise it. If you just smoulder and say nothing resentment will build, and sadly if you eat for comfort that’s exactly what will happen!!

If it’s your situation/status, how can you work on improving/changing it? Maybe it’s looking at those small changes that will help?

If it’s possessions, is there something you really want to own? Can’t live without? Take time out to work out a plan that you can live with, maybe it’s better budgeting? Or giving something up to get what you really want. Maybe it’s compromise? Only you know how much it matters to you and what steps you can take.

If it’s how you look and feel, then this is 100% something YOU can affect. It may take time, but let’s be honest it’s no different to putting money away each week! It will take commitment, dedication, patience and perseverance, but again you would expect it to take time if you were saving for say a holiday!

It’s fair to say everyone feels ‘discontent’ at various times. Sometimes you get past it, sometimes you’ll need to be proactive and take action, sometimes you do nothing and end up feeling worse that before. Ultimately, you have all the answers, if you want them badly enough to act on them.

  1. interesting article with much food for thought. I am lucky in that I am someone whose cup is half full, and in a good place at the moment. But one change I hope to make is to do some voluntary work up at Calke Abbey – form in. That will keep me out of mischief and hopefully up the activity levels 😀.
