The moment you realise….

I’m going to tell you a story, it is a true story……. Are you sitting comfortably?

This person had reached a certain age in life, as we all know, nature is not very generous as the years go by, your body changes and clothes don’t feel as comfortable as they used to, the mirror shows a different person to the one we imagine ourselves to be with extra lines, wrinkles and grey hair! Our joints hurt a bit more, we have less energy, feel a little more weary and tire more quickly. But we plod on, after all, this person isn’t a spring chicken and a few extra lbs aren’t that important…Are they????

On this particular day this person was out shopping, nice shopping – not grocery!! with a younger relative, in fact 20 years younger. it was early spring, and all the shops had the summer collections in store, eagerly they grabbed some that caught their eye and made their way to the changing rooms!

Need I say more????? Most changing rooms have a myriad of mirrors that enable you to view yourself in your outfits form every conceivable angle and in close-up. AGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

There it is… THAT MOMENT OF REALISATION!!!

That person felt old, ugly and fat!!!

So the realisation as…… Can’t change old, can’t change ugly…. CAN Do fat!

From that moment on, that person’s focus was to eat healthier and become more active, walking became the chosen activity, 5 times a week for 1 hour a time, whatever the weather!!

Was it easy? Was it plain sailing? Did all celebrations and weekends stop? No holidays or Birthdays? Of course not, there were the times the scales didn’t move, but undeterred this person continued on the quest they had begun, walked in the rain, snow, wind, heat without exception, they focused, ate healthier and felt better as over time their shape changed and the lbs started to move. Finally, after having lost 21 lbs this person felt happier, healthier regained confidence and self-esteem and reacquainted with the wardrobe they not only knew and loved, but liked how they felt when wearing them.

The moral of this story is…..

We may all have times where we can feel like this person, the only difference may be if you accept it and resign yourself to this is how life is….. Or like the person in the story, be the change and make it happen!

Success seems to be connected with action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don’t quit.

  1. Having just reached my mid/late 40’s this is so true.. time just creeps up on us and before we know it, someone different is staring back at us.. controlling my weight definitely gives me more confidence, and makes me feel young at heart x

  2. I can relate to this story. It is how I felt from day 1. Not liking how I felt or what I looked like in the mirror. My confidence was next to nothing. But having lost 25 and a half pounds I feel as the story says – healthier, confident and so much more better. Life feels fantastic 😊

  3. Very true . I’ve found a dress which I loved 20years ago which is now back in fashion . I was going to send it to the charity shop but I can’t bring myself to let go . So I’ll try one day to get back into it . The inspiration we get from the slim class means it can be done .

  4. I remember saying to my kids when they were younger, after a particularly horrible shopping trip, every time you see me eat something “remember the changing room”!! I lost the weight then. I am determined to do it again.

  5. Nothing could feel worse than having to buy the clothes you hate the least for a holiday or special occasion. I’ve been there and cried cos I hate myself so much for not taking control of eating sooner.

  6. This is so true, those mirrors 😭…and remember yes have a target where you want to be whether that’s a dress/trouser size,or weight target, but break it down to lots of smaller targets and it seems more achievable and your celebrating doing something good for you more often, even if the celebrating is just posting and showing of that new certificate you got in class you deserve it x
