All The Fun Of The Fair….

This time of year see’s the arrival of our famous local ‘Street Fairs’ Ashby has it’s ‘Statutes’ Nottingham the world famous ‘Goose Fair and ‘Loughborough it’s ‘Fair’ which is the last fair of the year. All of which herald the arrival of Autumn/Winter.

Often the rides we loved as teenagers don’t hold quite the same magic as an adult! They are faster and wilder than we remembered, our heads and tummies react in a very different way. The sounds of the fair are exciting and usually the music is fast, loud and with a constant beat. The lights. The smell of the fair is very intoxicating, the burgers and hot-dogs (Actually it’s the fried onions) the toffee apples and candy floss are all so inviting!! One of the best tips for me is eat before you go, it’s less tempting when you’re full, or if you have just got to indulge, be basic all day, have it, enjoy it then stop!

Let’s have a closer look at the rides……

The Big Wheel – not for those who don’t like heights! Do you sometimes feel that you are stuck going round and round and actually ending up exactly where you started? That often happens when you lose sight of your reasons for setting off on this healthy journey!

The Carousel/Speedway – not for those who get dizzy easily!! Same as the big wheel really, just going round and round in circles and getting nowhere, it no sooner seems to get going then suddenly you’re full circle, a bit like weigh day and achieved very little!

The Roller-coaster – definitely not for the fainthearted!! Just like your weight loss journey, start off really strong and positive and drop those lbs, then life gets in the way and it’s back up the way you came!

The Bumper-cars/Dodgems – not for the easily shaken!! You know where you’re supposed to be going, but some idiot is always knocking you off your route, you’re trying to go round them, but it doesn’t always work out that way and yet again, you’re beaten.

The Twister – not for those who don’t like going fast! This is an unusual ride as you go diagonal at great speed and it’s usually for two people, the larger person has to sit on the outside seat as they get squashed!!

The Walzers – This used to be my favourite ride! This ride is a blur if you happen to get into the right groove, but miss it and it constantly throws you forward making a disjointed and uncomfortable ride. Hit that smooth groove and you’re flying, exactly the same with your weight loss journey. The secret is… Stay In The Groove!!

Hook A Duck – All those amazing and fantastic prizes up for grabs, all you need to do is hook that duck and you’re a winner!! Sadly it’s never quite the prize you want, in fact it’s rubbish. It’s just the same when you rely on luck and don’t work for your success, then it’s never quite enough and you get disappointed. Remember if you want the best result then you have to put in the best efforts!!

So there we have all the fun of the fair, just like our healthy journey it’s full of challenges, surprises (some good, some not) there’s high’s and lows just like life itself. As the quote says, we can decide which rides are for us, and if we don’t enjoy the experience – don’t repeat it!!

  1. Back in 2019, Ashby celebrated 900 years of the street fair. Of course, back in the Middle Ages, it wasn’t a fun fair, more of a market really. The present fair, Pat Collins, has been coming since the 19th century and is still owned by the same people and they are a really lovely family. I made a filmed interview with Anthony Harris, the boss, in 2019 and it can be seen on YouTube. https://youtu.be/RYzO3ptcssY Contrary to what some people think, the Harris family are not dirty (there was a comment in our meeting last week). Their caravans are immaculate and they are respectable people with a permanent home in the West Midlands where they keep and maintain their equipment and vehicles during the winter. Anthony Harris was a local councillor for a number of years and Pat Collins himself was an MP who gave a huge amount of money to charity. I still find the fair exciting even though I don’t go on any of the rides anymore.

  2. Love it Jackie very clever analogies think I’m on the Carousel at the moment going round in circles and getting no where. I’ve had a ride on the waltzers but then dodgems always knock me off course x

  3. Loved reading this and I can honestly say I can relate to the big wheel and the waltzers at the moment. I’ve been run down just lately not feeling quite myself so eating rubbish and going round in circles. I’ve started to step back and focus on myself, to get myself feeling better and start thinking forwards not back 😊
