What instantly springs to your mind when you see the picture above?
Hours of playing in the warm summer sunshine, hearing the waves on the shore, creating your perfect sandcastles and decorated with seashells and (ours always had seaweed too) Building the moat and running up and down to the sea to collect gallons of seawater! Now we’re older, hopefully we can still share that experience with children/grandchildren too!
What were we actually doing????
Being Active!!!! It wasn’t an effort, it wasn’t a chore, we loved it!

Remember the joy of getting that kite to both go up and stay up!! How many times did we try, only to fail, but kept running and hoping and hey presto it was up!!

All too often the word ‘active’ leads to negative thoughts of pain, hard work, too much time/no time and too much energy, the reality to being more active is simply doing more that you did the day/week/month before and maintaining it. In order for that to happen you have to enjoy it and get some benefit from it else you won’t continue it! You may also have to adjust your activity seasonally.
In many previous blogs Do you do enough?, we have discussed in length the benefits or regular activity, not just on the body, but also on the mind, the added bonus of improved and better quality sleep patterns, which can only be a bonus!

Just do something.
It is important to stay active and take some form of exercise, especially as we get older. It helps to keep you healthy and mobile.

The more we move the more we achieve. Not just with loosing weight, which is always a bonus, but keeping muscles and joints healthy. Also keeps your mind healthy. A win all round.

Having never been a runner and knowing I couldn’t be a runner – I am now in week 4 of the NHS Couch to 5k programme and absolutely loving it. I will run for 16 mins in total when I go today. The first run I did was only running for 6 mins in 1 minute sessions and it nearly killed me!!
I am seeing the benefits in all ways and it’s also making me more mindful of my calorie intake – why do a run and then fill myself with rubbish.
So I am a new convert to the idea of exercising (and not just sitting at home waiting for the weight to drop off and my body to tone up) and recommend it to everyone!

It’s important to find something active you enjoy otherwise does become a chore! I’m loving being back at swimming…it clears the mind too. Now I’m on holiday I can continue with my swimming in the river and having fun! Happy days

I have been active since starting this journey and love it. If it’s not doing a run it’s Pilates or maybe simply just going for a walk 😊
