Best of British!!

The Best of British is a well known saying, in actual fact we possibly have more sayings than any other country!

Everyone has heard of most of the typical British Sayings, so today we are going to take a look at them and see if they are relevant to us.

‘Bob’s your uncle’
basically means it’s as easy as that!  And to be quite honest once you have decided you want to embark on this healthy journey, it really is as easy as that!

But we do need to make it easy,

To make it easy we do need to track and record, we need our meals to be creative, inventive, healthy, filling and satisfying – that’ll do really will not!!! Being more active regularly, not high days and holidays and good weather!!

‘Every cloud has a silver lining’
There’s always something good in bad times.

You know we have all have had times when we come to the scales and we get weighed and it’s not as bad as we thought it would be, or actually it;s worse than we expected. Often a weight gain is seen as a negative, but actually it could be seen as an early heads up that what you’re doing isn’t working, when you keep getting away with not being really on the ball, where is the drive to change? A gain is often the push you need.

Admitting you have a weight problem and because you need help you come along and you meet all these lovely people who have the same problems as you, and it’s so nice to know you’re not the only one

Even a bad week has a silver lining because it’s a learning curve that will help your future weight losses and maintenance if you are prepared to make the lifestyle changes.

‘Out of the frying pan into the fire’
From one problem to another.

Don’t let 1 bad day become a bad week, basically if you do slip up, look at how activity can help, refocus and remember your reason why, re-balance the rest of your meals, your day, your week, it is possible to recover and get a better result!

Staying away from your meeting that week so you don’t have it recorded, remember what the flip side is, we got to where we were because we stayed away! Staying away won’t make it go away, come, stay and let’s try to put it right together!

Could also be a frying pan and what we might cook in it?  Or how much oil/fat we’re using!!Fat Free

‘The grass is always greener on the other side’
You always think that other people’s lives are better than yours.

We often make excuses when it comes to weight loss, particularly if we have had a bad week.

We need to stop making excuses and think how we can!

You can waste a lot of energy and time and cause a lot of stress, we do need to start thinking “I can and I will”

‘Nothing ventured nothing gained’
You have to try or you won’t get anything.

If you have never tried adapting your meals how do you know they are not for you and your family? All you’re really doing is looking to replace/reduce the high caloried ingredients for lower ones and using less fat and sugar too. Summer Sensation Slow Cooking Summer… head over to these for ideas if you need them.

The average woman if she wants to lose weight needs approximately 1,200 calories a day. If you have never looked at your calorie intake how do know how many it actually is!

If you have never made a shopping list  how will you have the right food in your kitchen for a good week

When we all really know that doing these things gives us the best chance of not just a weight loss, but that sense of control, pride and focus we loved!

‘You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink’
You can give a person a chance, but you can’t make him or her take it.

I can say to you make a shopping list, but I can’t make you, I can say eat before you go shopping, make your meals amazing, come each week and stay and drink the water but I can’t make you.

But if you are truly desperate for a weight loss – then don’t forget ‘Nothing ventured nothing gained’

‘Where there’s a will there’s a way’
If we have the determination to do something, we can always find the path or method to do it.

This is about saying I can and I will, or how can I?

If you will be eating out, then you can still do it and lose weight but only if you want to and make better choices, there are always ways you can. If that’s not possible, balance the remainder of the day/week.

‘The best things in life are free’
We don’t have to pay for the things that are really valuable, like love, friendship, good health etc.

But to keep that good health you have to eat healthily and we should be all having at least 5 servings of fruit and/or vegetables every day.

Remember if you want to make those healthy changes ‘There is no such thing as a free lunch’

‘Apple of your eye’
This is all about favourites whether it is family or food

It’s not wise to cut out your favourite foods as this can lead to you being miserable and having too many of them. Find a way to stay in control and still enjoy them.

If you are a sweetie/chocolate person you will know the high calorie ones, are there alternatives? Could you make them into a dessert in order for them to be more satisfying and stretch out it out by adding fruit? Physical and Mental Satisfaction

‘The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach’
Many women have won a man’s love by cooking delicious meals for him. They fed his stomach and found love in his heart.

But there is also a saying that you can ‘Kill with kindness’.

Healthy meals aren’t just for us they are for your family and that’s the beauty of the Ripple Effect.. they as well as you will be getting healthier.

‘You can’t judge a book by its cover’
We need to read a book to know if it’s good or bad. We cannot know what it’s like just by looking at the front or back cover. Just as no-one should know you are choosing to become happier and healthier unless you decide to tell them.

The very best results on the scales will come when you embrace the concept of enjoying this incredible well-being journey you have embarked on!

Another saying is ‘Familiarity breeds contempt’ Could it be you’ve allowed old habits and behaviours to creep back in? Is it affecting your progress? Do you need to discover renewed enthusiasm and focus?

‘Eyes are bigger than your belly’
That speaks for itself.

We all know that we can make our meals bigger by adding low caloried fruit and vegetables.

We all also know that when its a food we really enjoy our portions tend to grow which will ultimately stop our weight losses

‘One man’s meat is another man’s poison’
People often don’t like the same things.

And that’s the beauty of you creating your very own, personalized food plan it factors in your likes and dislikes.

‘A stitch in time saves nine’
Act early and you can save a lot of time and a lot of heartache.

What could you do to save you time? Shop wisely, prepare in advance? Use the recipe ideas from previous blogs?

‘Birds of a feather flock together’
Need I say any more

The most successful members come to the meeting each week and stay to the meeting each week.

  1. A great roundup of English sayings and how they can be applied to us. I wonder what you would make of that very odd English saying “Well, I’ll go to the foot of our stairs.” My husband has an even odder one that almost no-one has heard of. It’s a euphemism for when you want to say that you’re going to the toilet, you say: “I’m going to turn my bike round.” I once taught this to a group of German mature students who wanted to learn English idioms so there are probably more people in Germany who are familiar with the saying than in England.
