I looked up the dictionary definition of “Excuse” verb, to seek to lessen the blame attaching to (a fault or offence) to try to justify. Something offered as justification.
I often think excusing ourselves is something we do as a child in order to avoid being told off, and it’s just continued. However trying to shift the blame when it comes to losing weight means that the only person we hurt is ourselves, and if we’re totally honest wouldn’t it be wiser to learn from it!!

Throughout the many years we have worked within the weight loss industry, I’m pretty sure we have heard every mortal excuse for why it wasn’t possible to either stick to a plan, or to be able to make wise choices when the reality is we are simply shifting the blame and not accepting the responsibility for our own actions.
Ultimately every action we take will have a consequence! So now it’s time to take a step back and truly analyse what was the real reason behind your justification was for letting go, because as we’ve said you’re only hurting you. Would that have happened if you were on your 1st week of your new journey? I seriously doubt it, as that 1st week your resolve and determination would overcome virtually any obstacle that was placed in your way. Because you were so serious about getting a great start. Have your priorities now changed???? If they have Why????
Let’s look at some of the ‘excuses’
- Weather – Snowed/rained/windy/sunny/Cold/hot (so how many days does that leave then)
- Tired (365 days of the year)
- Don’t like: – Water, Fruit, Veg, milk, breakfast, exercise, slow weight loss
- Didn’t have time to plan/to exercise/to fill in food diary/to cook it/to stay to meeting/to check portions
- Poorly/Hormones/Stress/Boredom
- Special Days – Celebrations like Christmas, Easter, Birthdays, Wedding Anniversaries as well as all the sad ones. And let’s not forget our Holidays!!
It’s time to have a bit of a rethink… We have all experienced most or even all of these since the beginning of our journey but we have coped! So what has changed!! Have you stopped remembering why you began??
Sometimes it needs to be the brutal truth… Aren’t you ‘tired’ of being overweight and unhealthy!!

I was tired of excuses that’s why I have my old diaries out which have helped to readjust my way of thinking and made me focus more on what I have achieved 😊

Yes, I use the justification all the time, a cake will bring my energy levels up with the sugar kick. Maybe a protein bar would be best, or some form of snack that is high in protein, as you know my fatigue is medically based, but you’re right I do use it as an excuse, any suggestions?

Try diverting the thought, do something away from food that occupies your mind & see if it helps. If you know you’ve had 3 balanced meals, it’s usually an excuse 👍

It’s so easy to make excuses for not starting a healthy eating programme immediately: there’s a part coming up, a holiday, Christmas – I’ll start after that. The trouble is, when “after that” comes, there is always another event on the horizon, another reason to put it off.

my favourite an excuse why it’s been hard, can’t get my head in gear. But the reality is I haven’t done it !!

I give in to temptation too easily. Must try harder. Feel quite good when I go for a coffee but don’t have cake or biscuits.

I’m with Lynne, I make the excuse that I cannot say no to things, or the peer pressure makes me eat more, especially at the weekend! When actually I need to have more control and determination 💪💪💪

I try not to use excuses because I only hurt myself. At the end of the day its me and me alone that will get me to where I want to be.
