Many of us have heard this saying, but what does it actually refer to?

It is commonly associated with the end of August the “dog days of summer,” which were traditionally believed to be the hottest and most unpleasant days of the year due to the heat, storms and even bad luck in ancient times.

But the figurative meaning is overcoming hardship and the origin of this is linked to the star Sirius (the dog star) which rises with the sun.

The phrase “the dog days are over” signifies the end of a difficult period and  It suggests a transition to a more positive and favorable time, implying that the worst has passed and better days are ahead.
